Robert Fuchs composed his first serenade in 1874, which made him famous beyond Austria’s borders. He is considered one of the most important Austrian representatives of late Romanticism. His students included Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf, Jean Sibelius, Richard Strauss and Franz Schmidt. The splendor of Vienna around 1900 can be experienced musically in his works.
The Romantic tonal language is taken to a limit that can only be developed further in a total compositional break. This was ultimately advanced by Arnold Schönberg with his twelve-tone music. Here, too, a parallel can be drawn to the approaching end of the Habsburg Empire.
