Andante grazioso and Capriccio op. 63

Date of composition: 1899
Scoring: String orchestra
Duration: 17 minutes
Robert Fuchs had already achieved international acclaim with the composition of his first serenade in 1874. He is recognised as one of the most significant Austrian composers of the late Romantic period. Notable among his students were Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf, Jean Sibelius, Richard Strauss and Franz Schmidt. The resplendence of Vienna around 1900 can be experienced musically in his works.
The Romantic harmonic language is pushed to a point beyond which it would only be possible to move by complete breaking with composing tradition; it was ultimately Anton Schönberg, with his twelve-tone technique, who achieved this. Parallels can also be drawn with the imminent end of the Habsburg monarchy.
