Sancta Maria, mater Dei” (Holy Mary, Mother of God) is a solemn consecration prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This work was entered into his personal catalog on September 9, 1777, in Salzburg. In the summer of that year, when Mozart was just 21 years old, he longed to leave Salzburg. He approached Archbishop Colloredo, requesting permission for himself and his father Leopold to seek their livelihood elsewhere.
Initially, the Archbishop relieved them of their duties but later regretted this decision and allowed Leopold to resume his position as deputy Kapellmeister. Mozart composed this consecration prayer in anticipation of the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8. Shortly thereafter, on September 23, 1777, he embarked on a journey with his mother to Augsburg, Mannheim, and Paris, a journey that ended in tragedy with the death of his mother.
